A mindfulness body scan is a simple but powerful mindfulness technique that helps us to become more aware of and present in our body, in the here and now, by directing our full attention to each part of the body and how it is feeling or not feeling.
By paying attention to each part of our body with mindfulness, we can become aware of any conscious or unconscious sensations, tensions, emotions, and resistances held in the body that we can acknowledge and release. The Mindfulness Body Scan exercise is therefore an essential part of our self-development.
With mindfulness we can stay present to the body we inhabit, and to its feedback messages that are there to inform us about how well we are living. Sometimes, when we lack mindfulness, we may ignore the stresses our bodies incur from our inauthentic lifestyles, by suppressing them, numbing ourselves, and dissociating from our bodies. This cuts us off from our body’s natural guidance system and perpetuates inauthentic living. It is like disconnecting the instrument panel from the dashboard of our car!
I have designed my mindfulness body scan meditation not only to bring you into the present and reconnect you with your body and its messages that you may be missing, but also as a means of relaxing and healing yourself. Mindfulness can be used in the body scan to
- open up to our true self and the essential life force that nourishes and sustains our bodies, restoring energy and vitality to stagnant and deficient areas
- release the stress and tension that affects the health of our bodies
- develop the gratitude that reconnects us to the blessings of life that we were previously unconscious of
All of these things can be profoundly healing, and when followed through with can lead us towards a more authentic lifestyle.
